Ben custodito reflects over border’s idea like an ambivalent place of open-closed towards the otherness but also ourselves. The Villazzano’s installation is located on sides of an old door. The two images recall two monumental guardians, who guard and protect the passage, such as high leather boots preserve and protect the body. The laces that tie up the two shoes’s edges evoke the possibility of “sewing” two parts together, and therefore not only refer to the border but symbolically they show also what holds together two areas. The twisted laces close, but not tightly, and they let something go through, like the iron gate closes the door but it allows the eye to move on.

Ben custodito nasce dalla riflessione sul concetto di confine come luogo ambivalente di apertura-chiusura, verso l’alterità ma anche verso noi stessi. L’installazione di Villazzano si situa infatti ai lati di un antico portone. Le due immagini richiamano due monumentali custodi, che custodiscono e proteggono il passaggio, come gli alti stivali in pelle custodiscono e proteggono il corpo. I lacci che stringono i due lembi delle calzature evocano la possibilità di “cucire” due parti insieme, e dunque non solo rimandano al confine ma a ciò che simbolicamente tiene insieme due territori. L’intreccio di lacci chiude, ma non ermeticamente, e permette che tra le sue trame possa continuare un passaggio, come il cancello di ferro battutto che chiude il portone ma permette allo sguardo di passare oltre.
